BEACH HUTS

It was hot with clear blue skies, but very windy. I tucked closely into the west wall which provided a perfectly sheltered spot to sketch from, and that was how I spent the ‘Open Huts’ weekend.

This is a beautiful stretch of coast, a combination of sand and fabulous pebbles, facing North across to Sutherland and beyond. I responded to the call-out for Artists to take over a hut and use it to display work. It offered a unique opportunity to host a mini exhibition right on the seafront, on the breezy shores of the Moray Firth.

During the course of the event I met beachcombers, dog walkers, art lovers and even an old friend who is very much part of 1ARCHITECTS who are responsible for their design and build. There had been some opposition to the development but in my opinion these traditional structures add exciting splashes of colour and interest to the area.

Besides - beach huts were originally built here in the 30’s, (the decline in popularity of the UK beach holiday led to their demise). These new buildings are highly engineered to withstand the extreme weather in the locality and each one weighs almost two tonnes. The proud owners do them justice by taking great care and attention in the way they are decorated and fitted out.

Well, with the resurgence in home vacations, it is hardly surprising that phase two is currently underway. Six more huts are under construction and some have already been reserved. Interestingly at least one more colour is planned to be added to the palette and you are being asked for suggestions!!
